Filters & Evidence

I just wanted to talk a bit more today about how the human mind works.

We already know that a belief is a well practice thought. It is the kind of thought that we took on as our own when we were a child with out question, and then the brain did exactly what it was meant to do and went about collecting evidence for us to prove that the thought was true. So we started with ‘a Thought’ and it now has numerous supporting thoughts. The more supporting thoughts a thought has the less likely we are to question it and the more likely it is to colour our day to day experience of life.

These thoughts are used by our brain to filter all the input our other senses provide during our day to day experiences of life. So as an example, if we believe that Friday the 13th is bad luck, regardless of how much we might like to participate in a thrilling activity on that day we will chose not to, and probably not even question why we don’t, we’ll just think we don’t want to. When actually that belief is driving that decision and the brain will support it as being to risky. But what if you did question it, why don’t I want to do that?, what do I really think?, what is the evidence that that thought is true?

Now to be fair this is a fairly inconsequential belief, however this is what happens with any thought we think is true. The good news is, that as an adult you can become aware of these learned thoughts and decide whether to keep them or not. Then choose thoughts/beliefs that you have consciously decided to believe because they are helpful to you.
