Most of us make our day to day decisions based on our past. We are guided by thoughts and beliefs previously learned through childhood, by experience, by being told, by watching others all before we knew we could question them.
We limit ourselves based on these past ideas and views, thinking that is just who we are. We don’t question ourselves, our thoughts, ideas or perspective, we are pre-dispositioned to repeat mistakes. For those who do question themselves it usually comes from a place of judgement.
As we move through our day to day lives all our big and small decisions are made based on these old thought patterns and processes that we have never questioned and we wonder why things don’t change.
We keep our dreams small, our goals within our comfort zone and accept this is our lot in life.
The great news is it is never to late to question our own thinking and the best news is that we get to decide what we want to think. IT’S TRUE!!!
We can choose what we want, dream big, set impossible goals and be who we want to be, any day, every day, any time.
I suspect It’s about now that your probably thinking, “what is she on about’. We have all heard the saying “if we keep doing what we have always done, we will get what we have always gotten”. So making decisions, or setting goals based on old thoughts, feelings and behaviours is not the way to get a different result.
Deciding what you want, and who you want to be, making decisions and taking action from a new way of thinking is the way to create the life you want. Does this sound easier said than done, the truth is that human biology was designed to instinctively resist change, because change brings unpredictability, uncertainty and to our brain that means risk, and the brain is all about keeping us safe and protected.
So our DNA is going to resist our efforts for change, and in that way it is hard, however a commitment to self awareness, and self coaching, will ensure you achieve any change you want. The process will bring up old thoughts that cause self doubt and unease, it will test your commitment, but remember you get to decide not your brain. You are in charge, not your brain.
Believing this is the first step, because until as adults, we accept responsibility for our brain, the brain we unconsciously developed as a child will rule. Would you want your kids making your life decisions for you?
Give it a go, choose one thought that you have brought with you from childhood that you don’t think is helpful, then choose a thought you would like to have instead. It has to be believable to you. Using curiosity, notice if you feel any different, better or worse. Your wanting a better feeling thought. Take it with you through the day with intention, and experience your day through a new lens.
Imagine if that one small change can make that kind of difference, what a fantastic experience your life can become.
The journey is not without challenge but what it brings to our lives is worth it.
